From Page to Screen: The Best Book-to-Film Adaptations for the Classroom
When I was a student teacher, I was placed in 4th grade classroom in and learned that students were expected to “Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.” (California ELA Standard RL.4.7) This became the genesis of Teachertainment. I was encouraged to show my students films! Why didn’t I become a teacher sooner? Teaching my students The Wizard of Oz from page to screen was my most memorable first year teaching experience.
When a story jumps off the page and onto the screen, characters move, settings come alive, and suddenly students aren’t just reading—they’re experiencing the story. It is one of my favorite ways to deepen comprehension while boosting engagement.
To celebrate National Library Week (April 19-25), here is my list of the Top 10 Book-to-Film Adaptations for the Classroom
